Proof of resources

Means of subsistence for the student visa.

By the Studacy team · Published on June 20, 2026

In short

To obtain the student visa, you must prove sufficient means of subsistence: an official amount indexed every year, set at 1 062 € net per month for 2026-2027. Two routes are possible: a blocked account covering twelve months (i.e. 12 744 €) or sponsorship by a guarantor via annex 32. In the latter case, the guarantor justifies 2 173,88 € per month for themselves, plus 1 062 € per dependent student.

How much do you have to prove?

The reference amount is set by royal decree and indexed every year. For the 2026-2027 academic year, it amounts to 1 062 € net per month. The proof covers twelve months, which corresponds to a blocked account of 12 744 €.

ItemAmount 2026-2027
Monthly reference amount1 062 € net / month
Blocked account (12 months)12 744 €
Guarantor (annex 32), for themselves2 173,88 € / month
Guarantor, supplement per dependent student1 062 € / month

Blocked account or guarantor (annex 32)?

You can prove your resources in two ways. The blocked account consists in depositing the sum corresponding to twelve months on a dedicated account, released gradually after arrival. The sponsorship rests on a guarantor who undertakes, via annex 32, to provide for your needs and justifies sufficient income.

Who can act as guarantor?

  • An adult or emancipated person.
  • Of Belgian nationality, an EU citizen residing for more than three months, a third-country national with unlimited residence, or a family member up to the third degree.
  • Justifying stable and sufficient income (2 173,88 € per month for themselves, plus 1 062 € per dependent student, for 2026-2027).
  • Whose signature on annex 32 is legalised at the guarantor's Belgian municipality, or at the consulate if the guarantor resides abroad.

The mistakes to avoid

Warning: the guarantor must justify 2 173,88 € per month for themselves PLUS 1 062 € per dependent student, and not a single overall amount. As the amounts are indexed every year, always check the value for the current academic year before putting the file together.

How Studacy supports you

We support many international students on this sensitive point of the file. We determine the most suitable route (blocked account or guarantor), we check the up-to-date amounts, we prepare annex 32 and the guarantor's income supporting documents, and we make sure the signature is legalised in the right place. The aim: a resources file accepted the first time.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What amount do you have to prove for the student visa in 2026-2027?
1 062 € net per month, i.e. 12 744 € for twelve months on a blocked account. This amount is indexed every year, so you have to check the value for the current academic year.
Is a blocked account or a guarantor better?
It depends on your situation. The blocked account means mobilising the sum for twelve months; the guarantor (annex 32) means an eligible person with sufficient income. We help you choose the safest route for your file.
How much must the guarantor earn?
For 2026-2027, 2 173,88 € per month for themselves, plus 1 062 € per dependent student. It is indeed an addition of the two, not a single amount.
Who can be my guarantor?
An adult of Belgian nationality, an EU citizen residing for more than three months, a third-country national with unlimited residence, or a family member up to the third degree, with sufficient income.
Where must the signature on annex 32 be legalised?
At the guarantor's Belgian municipality if they reside in Belgium, or at the competent Belgian consulate if the guarantor resides abroad.
