Enrolling at UCLouvain from abroad.

Belgium's largest French-speaking university, UCLouvain gathers its students across several campuses, including the student town of Louvain-la-Neuve. Here is the journey of a non-EU applicant for 2026-2027.

Enrolling at UCLouvain from abroad (non-EU)

In short

For 2026-2027, a non-assimilated non-EU student enrolling at UCLouvain pays the ordinary tuition fee (raised to around 1 194 € by the reform voted in June 2026) and an additional contribution of 4 175 €, that is, around 5 370 € for the year. The admission application closes on 31 March 2026 and comes with a 200 € application fee, deducted from tuition in case of enrolment.

How much does enrolment at UCLouvain cost for a non-EU student?

A non-assimilated non-EU student pays two amounts: the ordinary tuition fee, the same for everyone, and an additional contribution reserved for non-assimilated non-EU nationals. At UCLouvain, this contribution is a single flat amount of 4 175 €, the same whatever the programme or cycle; only the ordinary registration fee depends on the course.

ItemAmount 2026-2027
Ordinary tuition fee (full rate)around 1 194 €
Additional contribution for non-assimilated non-EU students4 175 €
Indicative annual totalaround 5 370 €

The 4 175 € contribution rests on the Wallonia-Brussels Federation program decree of 17 December 2025. The increase of the ordinary tuition fee to around 1 194 € stems from a reform voted on 4 and 5 June 2026, pending publication in the Belgian Official Gazette (Moniteur belge) as of the date of this page. We recalculate your exact cost based on your situation.

Assimilated or non-assimilated student: who pays the contribution?

The 4 175 € contribution only concerns non-assimilated non-EU students. An assimilated student pays like a resident. The main routes to assimilation:

  • Scholarship recognised by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
  • Long-term residence in Belgium (five years of legal stay).
  • Status of refugee, stateless person or subsidiary protection.
  • Modest household income, below the official thresholds.
  • Family tie (spouse, child, dependant) with a person already assimilated.

Regardless of individual status, nationals of the countries listed in the annexes of the ARES circular (least developed countries, countries with a low human development index, additional list) are exempt from the additional contribution, while remaining liable for the ordinary tuition fee. Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Lebanon are among them; Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria do not appear there and remain liable for the contribution, unless they qualify for individual assimilation.

Beware of the common misreading: the exemption applies to the additional contribution, not to the tuition fee. An exempt student therefore pays like a resident, and not nothing at all.

Deadline and steps of the admission application

The admission application of a non-resident non-EU applicant needing a visa closes on 31 March 2026 for the 2026-2027 academic year. It is the same deadline as in the other French-speaking universities: it is prepared months in advance, starting with the equivalence of the secondary diploma.

  1. 1Request the equivalence of the secondary school leaving diploma from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
  2. 2Build the admission application online with all the required documents.
  3. 3Pay the 200 € application fee, a condition for the application to be examined.
  4. 4Receive the decision, then launch the student visa application and finalise the enrolment.

At UCLouvain, the 200 € is deducted from tuition if the application is accepted and the enrolment finalised; it is not refunded in other cases.

What level of French to study at UCLouvain?

For a programme in French, UCLouvain requires a B2 level, and a C1 level for masters with a teaching focus. Proof is provided through an official test (DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF). Programmes taught in English and diplomas already obtained in French follow their own rules.

The capped programmes at UCLouvain

Three bachelors are capped for non-residents at UCLouvain: speech therapy, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and veterinary medicine. The non-resident quota is 30 %, except in veterinary medicine (20 %), with a draw under bailiff supervision in case of exceedance, over an application window of a few days in late August. Medicine and dental sciences, for their part, go through the French Community entrance examination, with a quota of 15 % of non-residents.
