Studying in Belgium from Algeria.

From the admission application to lodging the visa in Algiers, the journey of an Algerian student to French-speaking Belgium follows precise steps and a tight schedule. Here is how to approach it without losing a year.

Studying in Belgium from Algeria

In short

To study in French-speaking Belgium from Algeria, you must obtain an admission in a recognised institution (deadline often set at 31 March for universities), have the Algerian baccalaureate recognised through an equivalence with the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles (fees reduced to EUR 150 for Algeria), then lodge the type D long-stay visa at TLScontact Algiers. Algerian documents follow the classic legalisation until the entry into force of the apostille for Algeria, planned for 9 July 2026.

The steps to study in Belgium from Algeria

  1. 1Obtain an admission in a recognised institution (university, haute école or higher arts school) in French-speaking Belgium.
  2. 2Have the Algerian baccalaureate recognised through an equivalence with the Equivalence Service of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
  3. 3Once the admission is obtained, lodge the long-stay visa file (type D, study purpose) at TLScontact Algiers.
  4. 4Have the Algerian documents legalised (or apostilled depending on the date) and prepare the proof of means of subsistence.

Admission and equivalence: the calendar

For a first university enrolment, the Algerian student (non-resident, non-EU) lodges their admission application via the universities' common portal, with a deadline set at 31 March 2026 for the 2026-2027 year (form open in mid-February). Quota-limited programmes (medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, veterinary medicine, psychological sciences) follow a separate procedure, from mid-May to early July.

In parallel, the Algerian baccalaureate is recognised through an equivalence with the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, to be lodged before mid-July. As Algeria is among the countries eligible for development aid, the equivalence fees are brought down to EUR 150 (instead of EUR 400) and are non-refundable.

The student visa from Algeria

In Algeria, the long-stay visa application for Belgium is lodged at the TLScontact centre in Algiers, the only centre for the whole country, on behalf of the Belgian Embassy in Algiers. The study file rests on the admission certificate, proof of means of subsistence, a recent medical certificate and police clearance, insurance and payment of the fee.

Legalising your Algerian documents

Algeria has acceded to the Hague Convention (apostille), which enters into force for Algeria on 9 July 2026. Until that date, Algerian public documents intended for Belgium (diplomas, transcripts, civil status certificates) follow the classic legalisation chain: authentication by the competent Algerian authorities, then legalisation. From 9 July 2026, an apostille will replace this chain for new documents.

This transition creates a sensitive period: depending on the date of your procedure, it is the classic legalisation or the apostille that applies. We identify the exact procedure in force for your file, to avoid a rejected document.
