Université de Liège

Enrolling at ULiège from abroad.

The only full public university in Wallonia, the University of Liège opens its non-EU admission file from mid-February. Here is the complete journey of a non-EU applicant for 2026-2027.

Enrolling at ULiège from abroad (non-EU)

In short

For 2026-2027, a non-assimilated non-EU student enrolling at the University of Liège pays the ordinary tuition fee (raised to around 1 194 € by the reform voted in June 2026) and an additional contribution of 4 175 €, that is, around 5 370 € for the year. The admission form opens on 18 February and closes on 31 March 2026, with a 200 € deposit deducted from the fees in case of enrolment.

How much does enrolment at ULiège cost for a non-EU student?

The cost breaks down into two parts: the ordinary tuition fee, common to all students, and an additional contribution specific to non-assimilated non-EU nationals. At the University of Liège, this contribution is a single annual flat amount of 4 175 €, identical for all programmes and all cycles; only the ordinary registration fee varies by course.

ItemAmount 2026-2027
Ordinary tuition fee (full rate)around 1 194 €
Additional contribution for non-assimilated non-EU students4 175 €
Indicative annual totalaround 5 370 €
Admission deposit (deducted from the fees if enrolment)200 €

The 4 175 € contribution comes from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation program decree of 17 December 2025. The increase of the ordinary tuition fee to around 1 194 € results from a reform voted on 4 and 5 June 2026, and the University of Liège itself specifies that its 2026-2027 amounts hold subject to publication of the decree in the Belgian Official Gazette (Moniteur belge). We recalculate your exact cost at the time of your file.

Who is exempt from the 4 175 € contribution?

Only non-assimilated non-EU students pay the contribution. An assimilated student pays like a resident. The University of Liège notably recognises as assimilated:

  • Holders of a long-term or settlement residence permit (cards B, C, D, F, F+).
  • Refugees, stateless persons and beneficiaries of subsidiary or temporary protection.
  • Persons carrying out a genuine professional activity or receiving a replacement income.
  • Beneficiaries of CPAS (public welfare) support and scholarship holders of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
  • Children and dependants of a person falling within one of these categories.

Added to this is the exemption linked to nationality: nationals of the countries listed in the annexes of the ARES circular (least developed countries, low human development index, additional list) are exempt from the additional contribution, but remain liable for the ordinary tuition fee. Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Lebanon fall under it; Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria do not appear there and remain liable for the contribution, unless they qualify for individual assimilation.

Exempt from the contribution does not mean exempt from everything: the student concerned pays the ordinary tuition fee, like a Belgian resident. It is one of the very first things we check on your file.

What is the admission application timeline?

At the University of Liège, the admission form for non-EU students opens on 18 February and closes on 31 March 2026 for the 2026-2027 academic year. Files are then processed before 30 June. As everywhere, the equivalence of the secondary diploma is requested in parallel, without waiting for the admission decision.

  1. 1Request the equivalence of the secondary school leaving diploma from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
  2. 2Prepare the admission file and gather all the required documents.
  3. 3Pay the 200 € deposit so that the file is examined.
  4. 4Receive the decision before 30 June, then start the visa application and the enrolment.

The 200 € deposit is deducted from the registration fees if the application is accepted; in all other cases, it is not refunded. Some profiles (assimilated students, doctoral candidates, joint degrees) are exempt from it.

What level of French does ULiège require?

The required level is B2 in bachelor as in master, and C1 for masters with a teaching focus. Proof is provided through a recognised test (DELF, DALF, TCF, TEF) or by passing the French language proficiency examination organised by the university. Diplomas already followed in French may open an exemption.

Medicine, physiotherapy, veterinary: the capped programmes

Medicine and dental sciences are decided at the French Community entrance examination, with a quota of 15 % of non-resident successful candidates and a merit-based ranking. Physiotherapy and rehabilitation and speech therapy apply a quota of 30 % of non-residents, veterinary medicine 20 %, decided by a draw under bailiff supervision in case of exceedance. Applications go through the Mesetudes platform, over a short window.
